How to play Fishbowl

Teams alternate timed turns until every prompt is guessed. Shuffle the same words and make the clues harder each round.

ROUND 1

Describe

Say anything except the answer, part of the word, its spelling or a rhyme. No gestures.

ROUND 2

Charades

Act out each prompt without speech, sounds or mouthing words.

ROUND 3

One Word

Give exactly one spoken clue for each prompt. No gestures or extra words.

Setup and teams

  • Split four or more players into two balanced teams.
  • Add three prompts per person or generate a 20–40 word bowl.
  • Choose 45, 60 or 90-second turns.
  • Pick a new clue-giver for every team turn.

Scoring and skips

  • Score one point for every correct prompt.
  • A skipped prompt returns to the bowl.
  • The unfinished prompt returns when time expires.
  • The team with the most points after round three wins.

How many people do you need for Fishbowl?

Fishbowl needs at least four players split into two teams. Six to twelve players usually gives everyone more clue-giving turns and a livelier bowl.

How many words does each person add?

Three words or names per person is a dependable starting point. Pocket Party Quick Play can create a ready-made 20, 30 or 40-word bowl instead.

How long is each Fishbowl turn?

Most groups use 60-second turns. Pocket Party also offers 45-second turns for a faster game and 90-second turns for younger or newer players.

Do you reuse the same words in every round?
