Setup
Press the 'Start Game' button at the top of this page. This will assign everybody with a secret thing to draw and also assign one person to be the imposter artist. The most creative player goes first, alternatively, play paper scissors stone to choose who draws first.
How to Play
The first player takes their turn to draw one line of the object which was assigned to them. For example, if it was ‘Pizza’, then the first player may draw a circle. One line means the finger/pen must not lift up for multiple strokes, it can only be one stroke only per player. Typically a single line or a basic shape. Then the next player, to that person's left (in clockwise order) takes their turn to continue drawing the picture by drawing one line only. All players continue to take turns doing this in a clockwise direction. One will have been assigned the Imposter Artist role, they won't know what they are drawing, but they need to pretend as if they do know by adding one line to the picture without acting suspicious. They’ll need to act confident because if players discover they are the imposter artist they lose the game! After every player has contributed to the drawing twice, everyone needs to vote on who they think the imposter artist is by pointing. If the majority vote is correct the real artists win. But if the majority vote is incorrect the imposter artist wins.
Frequently asked questions
How many people do you need to play Imposter Artist?
Imposter Artist works best with 4-10 players. You need enough artists to build a drawing and enough suspicion for the imposter to hide.
Is Imposter Artist like A Fake Artist Goes to New York?
Yes. It uses the same core idea: everyone contributes to one drawing, but one player does not know the prompt and has to blend in.
Can you play Imposter Artist online?
Yes. Pocket Party lets groups play Imposter Artist with browser or app support, making it useful for remote hangouts and video calls.
Do you need to be good at drawing?
No. Simple, messy lines usually make the game funnier. The challenge is reading intent, not making perfect art.
What is the best strategy for the imposter artist?
Draw safe, flexible lines early, watch what other players add, and avoid making a mark that proves you do not know the prompt.
