What Happens When You Hit Play

Everyone gets the same secret object to draw — except one player, the Imposter Artist, who sees nothing. Players take turns adding one stroke at a time to the same shared drawing, for two rounds. After that, the group votes on who they think is faking it based on the most suspicious lines.

After Round 1

Everyone has drawn one line. Most players know the secret object; the Imposter Artist is guessing and trying to blend in with a believable first stroke.

After Round 2

Everyone has drawn two lines. Now the drawing starts to take shape — and the Imposter Artist must add another line without giving away that they're clueless.

Time to vote

Who looks suspicious? After two rounds, the whole group points to the player whose drawing feels the most "off." If they catch the Imposter Artist, the real artists win.

Two Ways to Play

Draw together in person or play from anywhere. Same game. Same chaos.

Friends drawing on their phones together in Imposter Artist

Phones Mode

Play on your screens. Everyone draws their line right on their phone, all connected in the same shared drawing. Great for friends hanging out in the same room — or for playing remotely over voice chat on any device (phones, tablets, laptops… whatever you've got).

Paper Mode

Use the app to assign everyone their secret object (and choose the Imposter Artist)… then switch to pen and paper. Pass a marker around the table and add one stroke at a time to the same drawing in real life. Same rules, same chaos — just way more social.

The rules are identical — only the drawing surface changes.

HOW TO PLAY

Master the art of drawing... or faking it

1

Deal the Cards

Everyone receives a card with the same secret object... except one player gets the 'Imposter' card.

2

Round 1: Draw

Each player adds ONE line to the shared drawing. The imposter must fake it without knowing what to draw.

3

Round 2: Draw Again

Everyone adds one more line. The imposter tries to blend in while the others watch for suspicious strokes.

4

Discussion & Vote

Discuss the drawing. Point fingers. Then everyone votes on who they think the imposter is — whoever gets the majority vote is the final pick.

5

Reveal & Score

If the imposter is caught, the non-imposters win. If the imposter avoids being voted out, they win.

FAQs

Imposter Artist questions

Answers for groups choosing a drawing game that still has bluffing and deduction.

How many people do you need to play Imposter Artist?

Imposter Artist works best with 4-10 players. You need enough artists to build a drawing and enough suspicion for the imposter to hide.

Is Imposter Artist like A Fake Artist Goes to New York?

Yes. It uses the same core idea: everyone contributes to one drawing, but one player does not know the prompt and has to blend in.

Can you play Imposter Artist online?

Yes. Pocket Party lets groups play Imposter Artist with browser or app support, making it useful for remote hangouts and video calls.

Do you need to be good at drawing?

No. Simple, messy lines usually make the game funnier. The challenge is reading intent, not making perfect art.

What is the best strategy for the imposter artist?

Draw safe, flexible lines early, watch what other players add, and avoid making a mark that proves you do not know the prompt.
